PIG PRODUCTION

HUGE MARKET IN ENGLAND ‘;i ,v “Considerable interest has lately been taken in the possibility of the export of pig products from this country,” says a writer in an exchange. “There is no reason why New Zealand should not have a share in the £50,000,000 to £60,000,000 imports of Great Britain. Last year Great Britain imported £55,000,000 worth of bacon and pork products, while New Zealand, capable of producing large quantities of pigs at a reasonable cost, only exported some few thousand pounds’ worth. With the decrease in the export of beef it is pleasing to notice that considerable attention has now been given to pig fattening. Much larger quantities are coming forward, and New Zealand should before very long have a share of the many millions’ worth of pork products that have been imported into Great Britain. Giving an indication of the big increase in quantities coming forward, only recently the New Zealand Bacon Company put up a record one day’s kill of 1070 pigs. This is by far the largest, number ever killed by any one concern in Australia or New Zealand.”
