HERBIES MEMORIAL

ALLOCATING THE COST MATAMATA COUNCIL’S OBJECTION \ / The Herries Memorial at Te Aroha was a subject of discussion at the meeting ox the Matamata County Council on Wednesday. A letter was received from the Herries Memorial committee together with plans for two designs by well-known Auckland and Hamilton monumental masons. It was stated that the proposed work by the Auckland firm would take six months to complete, whilst that of Hamilton’s firm would occupy three. The committee has recommended the memorial submitted by the Auckland firm. Both designs were placed at £SOO.

After, careful consideration the committee has recommended that the contributions should be assessed as follows:—Counties (3) £SO each; Boroughs of Te Aroha and Tauranga £2O each, and Morrinsville £ls; Town Boards (2) £2O each; Drainage Boards (3) £7 each; and the Te Aroha Jockey Club £2O. Cr. Rollett': The Te Aroha Borough allocation of £2O is absolutely ridiculous.

The Chairman: Yes, it is ridiculous. Continuing Cr. Rollett said that the Matamata County Council could not say what should be contributed till it was known where the monument would be erected.

Cr. Pohlen: Our County should not be asked for £SO. Cr. Rollett: If the memorial is to be placed in the Te Aroha Borough then the Borough Council should contribute more than £2O and Matamata County Council not more than £lO, If. the memorial is to be placed in the cemetery then,£3o should be enough. Finally it was decided that objection should be taken to the proposed allocation and that it should be suggested that Te Aroha should contribute £2 for £l. It was further decided that a meeting of the Memorial Committee should be held to consider the matter.
