THE CROSS CUT
DRAINAGE AT MANAWARU
WIDENING AND REGRADING NEEDED
i The “Cross Cut” drain running from Waghorn’s Road to No. 58., which during the’ winter Hooded a good deal and did not carry the water away as well as might have been expected, was inspected on Tuesday by Mr F. E. Hughes (chairman) of the Hungahunga Drainage Board, and Mr R. Johnson, engineer.-
The drain through the properties of Messrs A. Martin and Nicholson was followed up and carefully viewed. MiMartin stated that during the winter the “Cross Cut” failed to carry the flood waters away and a considerable area of his property was inundated, causing considerable inconvenience and discomfort in his farming operations.
The “Cross Cut” was made about five years ago, and was deepened about three years ago. It was also cleaned out last year, but the growth of clover weed and the formation of “ironstone bars” is hindering effective drainage. It was pointed out that in flood time the trouble is probably increased- by a low lying bridge.
.The Board representatives were sympathetic to the desires of the settLe'rs and it was recognised that the “Cross Cut” required widening and regrading. This it is expected will solve the difficulties of the settlers.
