NEW DEPARTMENT

If we do misunderstand Mr Parr, the Department will plunge soon into the motor transport business—a departure that will be novel, and, in an economic sense, possibly dangerous, but a good risk is taken in view of the advantages of consolidated schools. But the Department seems also to be able to import a large number of teachers from Britain —Auckland, for example, guarantees work for 30 or 40 —and it is not easy to understand what the justification is. It is true that nearly i every school in the Dominion could have its staff doubled with advantage to the but the Dominion certainly cannot afford at the present time to double its teachers’ salaries’ bill, and by the time it can afford to do that the training colleges ought to be supplying reinforcements as fast as they can be absorbed. We hope the Minister will not encourage importations without the clearest evidence, which the public should be permitted to examine, that efficiency is impossible without therm—Press.
