Mr P. Lumley, of Wairoa, has been appointed secretary to the Tauranga Hospital Board. There were 71 applicants for the position.

Mr G. A. Watt, stationmaster at Drury, has been appointed stationmaster at Thames, in place of Mr J. A. Arthur, who has been transferred to Paeroa.

Constable Monson, who sustained a broken leg some few weeks ago, has returned from the Waikato hospital to his home, and, it is pleasing to state, is progressing favorably.

The Rev. J. E. Ward, minister of the Presbyterian Church, Taumaranui, visited Te Aroha and Morrinsville at the beginning of this week in advocacy of the claims of Technical College for Maoris at Waimara.

Rev. Dean Van Dyk, principal of the Millhill Fathers, who is making an appeal throughout the diocese for financial assistance for the Maori Mission, was in Te Aroha during the earlier part of this week.

Mr F. E. Hughes, chairman of the I-lungahunga Drainage Board, left Te Aroha on Monday evening on a short visit to Wellington in connection with applications for grants for improving the Piraunui and Waiwere outlets.

The health of the Minister for Lands (the Hon. D. H. Guthrie) continues to improve. Writing to a friend from Suva, where is is recuperating, Mr Guthrie says that if his health improves so much in the next three weeks as in the last he will be quite fit to resume his Ministerial duties.

Mr R. Coulter, Mayor of Te Aroha, is at present on a visit to Wellington in connection with municipal business. While in the Empire City Mr Coulter will in particular consult with the Prime Minister regarding the promised subsidy for the proposed new traffic bridge over the Waihou.

A message from Gisborne reports the death of the Rev. Thomas Anson Cato, at the age of sixty-five years. Deceased had celebrated holy communion at Te Hapara, but collapsed on his return home. He was assistant priest in the Gisborne parish, and formerly rector of Braidwood and Gunning, New South Wales. He had been vicar of Waimangaroa and Denniston, Reef ton, Nelson, Wairoa, and Opotiki.
