FAILURE TO REGISTER DOGS
FINES IMPOSED The Piako County dog registrar, Mr C. J. Hobbs, proceeded against several settlers at the local S.M. Court yesterday for failure to register dogs as required by the Dog Registration Act. Six charges were withdrawn. James Shine, Waihou, said he had registered two dogs. A third dog was the subject of the charge. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for 10s and costs 7s. James Miller, Eastport Road, was mulcted in 10s fine and 14s 6d costs.
J. D. Mackay, Eastport Road, will have to pay the same amount. Thomas Cray, Waihou, pleaded not guilty. The registrar, stated defend ant had written intimating his intention of registering the dog at Hamilton. Defendant said he had not owned a cattle dog since November, 1916. The dog in question had been
given by him to his share-milker, who had sires disappeared. The dog was still wandering ab-ufc the Waihou district. The S.M. decided to adjourn the case until next Court day, stating if the dog was registered meantime he would not impose a penalty. J. H. Stewart, Waihou, will have to contribute 17s for his failure to register a dog. G. Taylor, Ngarua, who had failed to register two dogs, was lined £l, with costs 14s 6d. Charles Steiner, Lower Waitoa, had his case dismissed, claiming that the animal in question was under the age of six months. Two charges were preferred against Geo! Sanson, Lower. Waitoa. Oue was for failing to register three dogs for the year 1917, and the second for the earns offence in the year 1916. A fine of 10s on each charge was impossd, with total costs £1 Is 6d. A Te Aroha West settler, John King, denied liability on a charge of failing to register a dog, claiming that the dog in question was a stray one which had followed him home some three or four months before. The explanation was unavailing, and a conviction was recorded, with costs 7s.
