WORKERS’ RAILWAY TICKETS The Hon. W. H. Horrios, Miuister for Railways, acknowledged receipt of the Council’s protest against the proposed discontinuance of worker’s tickets on the railways as from the 16th inst., and said the points raised will receive his earnest consideration.

The chairman explained that a deputation of workers had waited on Cr. Walters and himself in the matter, hence the letter to the Minister. The Department’s action was not in the best interests of the couutry. The Chairman's action was approved. The chairman stated that the mattor of the Government purchasing settler's farms and holding them for returned soldiers had been considered by the local board of trustees. He thought the Council could strengthen the hands of the Government by supporting the proposal. He moved accordingly. Cr. Hughes seconded, considering the proposal a very sensible ono. Cr. Walters supported. Cr. Brady suggested that only picked men suitable and used to farming should be placed on such farms. The resolution was ennied unanimously, and copies will be forwarded to the Minister for Lands and the M.P. for the district. NO FUNDS It was decided jtliat the has no funds available for the Y.M.O.A. War Fund, though recognising the merits of the appeal. The circular letter from tho Waipara County Council, asking for support in urging sottlcrs to plant cereals and potatoes as a war precaution was “ received,” members remarking that wheat could not bo profitably grown in the county. SANATORIUM ROAD On Cr. Bell’s motion, it was decided tc ask the Government to take over control of the Sanatorium near Cambridge. Repairs are to be effected to a bridgo on the Morrinsville-Tahuua road. Work on the Tauhei-Morriusville road was left to Cr. Orr to attend to.
