BOROUGH COUNCILLORS BID FAREWELL TO OFFICE THE MAYOR CONGRATULATED AND THANKED FELICITOUS SPEECHES

At the termination of general bnsiness at the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday evening, His Worship the Mayor remarked that he was sorry only three of the old councillors had accepted nomination for another term. He was pleased at hearing the clerk’s statement of the finances, and the councillors had reason to feel proud. One point worthy of notice was that the Greater Te Aroha was an accomplished fact. The workers’ homes Bcheme had been started, and he hoped by Cr Coulter’s return from the war that a number of workers’ homes would be erected. As a novice in the Mayoral chair he sincerely thanked the councillors for their loyal support during the past year. The Town Clerk and other officials had been thoroughly conscientious and capable. He also referred to the Press reports, which had invariably been full and fair. All the council' lors were proud that one of their number, Cr Coulter, was going on active service, and he could assure that gentleman that he had given good service to the burgesses and on his return the speaker was sure the burgesses would be glad to again avail thtmselves of his services if he would offer them. They hoped to meet him in a few weeks' time, when he hoped to again have something to say to Cr Coulter on behalf of his present fellow councillors. The deputy-mayor, Cr Mackie, congratulated the Mayor on his capable and couscieutious work during his term, and hoped the incoming conncil would work as amicably and for the I general good as the outgoing Mayor and Council had done. All were pleased to see His Worship had been re-elected unopposed. Cr Morison also congratulated His Worship, and expressed appreciation of the friendly feeling that had existed between the councillors themselves in the conduct of public affairs. The officials and the Press had always been courteous and' attentive to the welfare of the borough. Crs Brown, Bell, Rayner, Barrett and Coulter added their mead of appreciation and congratulation not only to the Mayor, but to their fellow councillors, the staff and the Press. The staff and the Press representative present briefly acknowledged the compliment. Mr Stanley briefly thauked those

present for the very appreciative references to himself and to his wife. If he met as good a council next term as the present one he felt his task would be a pleasant one.
