War Notes

During the action on May 16th and 17th in the Festubert district the 57th Prussian Infantrymen lost 2400 out of 3,000. The auxiliary ship Princess ,Irene was accidently blown up in bheerness Harbour. It is believed that over 200 lives were lost. A detachment of 18 French aeroplanes bombarded the Ludwigshafen chemical works, the most important explosive factory in Germany. Several buildings were struck and numerous fires broke out. The Admiralty reports that the British submarine Ell sank a vessel in the Sea cf Marmora with a great quantity of heavy-gun ammunition and the mountings of a cinch gun aboard. She torpedoed a supply ship, and finally entered the harbour of Constantinople, and exploded a torpedo alongside the main arsenal. The Times correspondent at Buenos Aires states that resentment is felt that American coal carried by British ships should be delivered to a German coal company which coaled German cruisers.
