A MARRIAGE CEREMONY.
In the Northwest part of our country there lives a well known Irish magis trate, a man of liberal education and a full quota of genuine wit, says an exchange. A short time ago Jim and Bet, a coloured pair, called upon the squire to be united for better or worse. The squire having been notified of their coming, prepared and actually used the following ceremony : “Jim, will you take Bet, Without any regret, To love and cherish, ’Till one of you perish, And is laid under the sod So help you God ?” After being answered in the affirmative by Jim, the squire turned to Bet and said : “Bet, will you take Jim, And cling to him, Bofh out and in, Tb-ough thick and thin, Holding him to your heart, ’Till death do you part ?” But :• quiesced by a modest bow of the head, and now the happy pair was dit. nissed as follows : “Through ’ifo’s alternate joy and strife, I now pronounce you man and wife. Go up life’s bill ’ti’ 1 you get to the level, And salute your bride, you black, rusty devil.” —Printing Trade News. The Arkansas J.P. does it this way: “Stand up ; jine hands ; hitched ! Five dollars please.” TYPOGRAPHICAL.
She—Do you like tea ? He—Yes, but I like the next letter better.
THE PIPE OF PEACE.
The Country Editor sat in his chair Smoking a pipe of clay ; Thinking of troubles, mostly small, That had bothered him that day. Unpaid bills, a subscriber’s kick, A bulky press and a broken stick, Lay heavy on his soul. A city daily’s page outspread. Captured his careless eye. Its startling headlines seemed to breathe The city’s daily cry ; Murder and suicide, death and divorce Failure, dishonor, right conquered by force, These were the stories told. And the editor filled up his pipe again, While his thoughts breathed deep content. “ What matter the worries of a day In a life clean and well spent ? Learning a little, helping some, My living earned, —my work well done, lam rich indeed ,” he mused.
