SOME GOOD SHOOTING.

DETAILS OF SERVICE MATCHES. PRIZE MONEY WELL DISTBIBUTED. Tkentham, Maich 6. To-day was devoted entirely to service matches at Trentbam, and keen interest was taken in them by the multitude of competitors. These matches have comparatively little interest to the general public because there is nothing that stands out conspicuously in them as in the case of the various matches for the championship bell, but they secure the class of shooting for which the Dominion Rilie Association really exists, and so are valuable aid tc national defeuce.

The weather conditions to day %vere similar to those existing during Thursday and Friday, and the oldest Trentham marksmen cannot recall so long a spell of perfect weather during a championship meeting. The only drawback has been the unusually high temperature during the day and the excessive cold at night. In starting the men off to the mcunds this morning Colonel Collins made a cheering announcement. The programme, he said, had been based upon an estimate of 500 competitois but the total number of riflemen entered was 536. It has therefore been decided to give £ 100 in extra prizes. £SO for a Consolation match, open to all competitors who had not won £1 or over, and £SO to be distributed at the rate of £1 per man to the fifty men whose aggregate scores are nearest to the fifty highest aggregates filing in the King's prize competitions and gain £2 per man. There were four service matches fired to-day. In service match No. 7 sharp shooting, 200 yards, seven shots, 125 competitors won 8s each. In Service match No. 8, rapid firing, 500 yards, the following were the principal prize winners: Turner (Petone), £5, 46 ; j Potter (Auckland), £4, 45; Chapman , (Tekapu), £3, 44 ; Frederick (Marton), i Milroy (Opaki), Brenan (Pongaroa) each scoring 43, £3 ; Eait (Gisborne), McCalmont (Opaki), Soper (Tuamarina) each £3 with 41 each. ATTACK MATCH. WON BY WAIKATO MAN. Tteitthait, March 7. Attack Matoh, No. 9, distances 400, 300, and 200 yards. The competitors start at the 500 peg on the bugle sound ; the competitors run to 400 yards, and fire from there three rounds. A further bugle is sounded, the competitors ceasing fire, run to the 300 yards firing point, firing a further three rounds. The same proceedings take place at the 200 range : Peak (Waikato), 52s 6d, 9 ; Eden (Waimea), 52s 6d, 9 ; Pankhurst (Colacßay), 30s, 8; Henry (Opaki), 30s, 8.
