The Rev. J. Dukes will preach in the Methodist church, Te Aroha, on {Sunday. Subject, Morning, ‘‘The Greatness cf Gentleness.” Evening, “ Christianily and Child-life.” The many friends of Mr Peter Baine are pleased to see him out and about again after his recent illness. Lodge at tl eir monthly meeting the other evening, Bro. E. Beswick, A.D, iu the chair A large amount of business affecting the Lodge was brought forward and dealt with. It was resolved that Bro. Devey, j D.P., attend the Grand Lodge meeting ta be held at Palmerston North early next month. During the evening Bro. Devey, j 0.P., presented Bros. H. Whitehead. F. i Mackie, and W. A Biggs with their P. A. diplomas. Several new members wire j initiated into Druidism, and two more 1 proposed for acceptance. This Lodge is ! Ensiling its way to the front and its ' enetits much appreciated by those j attached thereto. j Be sure and put in an appearance at the Public Hall, this evening. The entertainment is worth seeing. j Good prices were realized at Messrs Gordon Bros’, sale on Thuisday. Draught horses were down, but diiirv cattle, implements, etc., sold well. , Mr John Rowe, proprietor of the To Aroha Bacon Factory, intimates that owing to the continuance of the coalmining difficulty, ho is unable to take pigs until further notice. | Yesterday, before Messrs Montgomery and Gavin,, J’s.P., a gentleman of a a pugilistic turn of mind, was severely reprimanded by the Bench for his unseemly behaviour, and mulcted in about :iOs fines, court costs, etc

Tho other day several cyclists wore careering along the road at a mad rate when thoy collided right in front of Mr Fisher’s horse ; the latter gentleman was driving into To Aroha from Waitca at the time. Mr Fisher, whose horse stoppod rather suddenly, was thrown on to the wheel guard, but luckily maintained his hold on the reins, otherwise a serious accident might have resulted. There was a very good attendance at the Eleventh Annual Show, held under the auspicies of the Ohinemuri 'Agricultural and Horticultural Society. From the President (Mr H. Poland, M.P.) down to the Secretary (Mr John Raebourne) all worked hard to make the aft'iir a success. The entries were on the small side, owing to the show being somewhat earlier this year. In some iustances the quality was exceptionally good. The judges were : !Pot plants, cut flowers, and fruit, Mr Hugh Ross (Waihou), garden produce and field produce, Mr Hubbard (To Aroha) ; butter, Air C. S. Foster (Paeroa); bacon, poultry, pickles, sauces, wines, bread, cakes, etc., Mr AV. Scott (Thames) ; table decorations and miscellaneous, Miss Lynch (Thames) ; children’s section, the Hev. Gow (Pa Q roa). The most successful exhibitor in the fruit class was Mr A. Bossons, of Te Aroha, who carried off most of the prizes. Mr Bossons display was really fine, especially his collection of fruit of all classes, for which he received the Ist and 2nd prizes.

There was a very good muster of the Te Aroha Defence Rifle Club in the Pound Paddock on Thursday evening last, when the members were put through a course of drill and iinstruction by staff Sergt-Major McDonald. The Captain of the Club (Mr F. W. Wild), put the men through a series of extended and other movements during the evening. There will not be any Church of England seivice at Elstow on Sunday next.

The annual meeting of the Waihou Athelic Club took place in Mr Lewis’ Hotel last evening. A good deal of business 'was transacted. The funeral of the late Mrs William Frank Osbarne (nee Miss Knowles, of Preston, England) took place on Thursday afternoon last. Prior to cortege starting a short service was held in St. Mark’s Church, Te Aroha. The funeral was a lengthy one, over thirty vehicles, besides horsemen, joining in the mourn ful procession. The Rev. E. M. Cowie read the burial service in a most impressive manner. The deceased, who had only been married some twelve mouths, made many friends during her residence in the district, and was much respected. AVe extend to the. sorrowing husband and relatives our heartfelt sympathy in their hour of trouble. We have received a snpply of programmes of the South Auckland Rifle Association’s meeting, to be held at Te Aroha on 29th and 30th iust. We under .-tand that both the Te Aroha Rifle Club and Piako Moun'ed Rifles will take part in the meeting. There are some nine matches altogether. The meeting will c.ommence at 8 o’clock each morning and matches G, 7, Sand 9 will be fired on 30 th January. Entries will be received by the Secretary (Capt A. C. Hubbard), up to Saturday, Jan. 23rd, by letter or wire. Anyone desiring a programme can get one on applying at this office.
