PAEROA v TE AROHA.

In response to a challenge from the Paeroa Ladies’ Hockey Club, the Te Aroha Ladies’ Hockey Club visited Paeroa yesterday afternoon and suffered defeat by two goals to one, after a hard-fought game, Paeroa scoring their last goal on the call of time.

A number of hockey enthusiasts went down with the team to barrack for the tartans.

In the first spell Paeroa were attacking the best part of the time and a smart stroke by Miss Silcox cannoned off Miss Ryan and went between the posts, In the second spell Te Aroha took' a hand in attacking, and after a goo l deal of exciting play, Miss Spooner dashed in and struck a goal from a difficult angle, making the score one all, to the great delight of Te Aroha’s supporters. Te Aroha’s wings : Misses Spooner and Hare were in great form, and backed up by Miss McKenzie, centre forward, were running all over the Paeroa forwards, but the want of backing up by the halves prevented many certain scores. Just on the call of time, Miss Silcox, who was ph lying a great game, scored a second goal for Paeroa, and the whistle immediately sounded, leaving Paeroa ’ winners by two goals to one. Sir Lowe carried out the duties of ref ree in a capable manner, and ■ Messrs Carder and Bowles acted' as line umpires. | The game was played in the best of spirit right through, and the Te ; Arohaites were very pleased with the I hospitality extended to them. After- ' noon tea was served in the pavilion ' after the match .

For Te Aroha, Miss McKenzie in the centre and the two wings played great games. Miss Spooner showed a glimpse of her real form, and on the day’s play, held her own with any of the wing players we have seen for some time. The goal she secured from a difficult angle brought forth rounds of applause. The halves all worked hard, and a free hit by Miss A. Hare, about took the record for the biggest hit by a lady on the Paeroa ground. The full-backs, Misses Willis any Ryan were very safe, and got through a lot of work, while the goal-keeper, Miss Garret, did all that was asked of her in a finished manner.

Taking the game right through, Te Aroha showed much improved form, and fed their wings better, and opened the game up. Their combination has also greatly improved, and we think that with a few more matches, they will hold their own with any of the clubs. For Paeroa,' it would be hard to pick out any special player, as our reporter arrived too late to ascertain the names of the players. But all did sterling work. The return match will be played at Te Aroha on August 7 th.

At the meeting of the Ladies’ Club in Mr Wild's rooms on Monday night all players and prospective players are invited, and free criticism is invited.

A meeting of those in favour of forming a gents’ hockey club will be held in Keesing’s Hairdressing rooms to-night at 7,30.

WAIHOU LADIES v. 01IAUP0. fOur Own Corresponded.] The above match was played at Hamilton on Saturday 20th, on a ground kindly lent for the occasion by the Hamilton ladies hockey club. At the beginning of tho game, which started at 10.15 a.m,. the Ohaupo players who had put a strong team on the field, notwithstanding that this is their first season, had somewhat the better of the play but the Waihou players secured tho ball and Miss M. Taylor scored a goal. At half-time the scores read Waihou 1, Ohaupo nil. When play was resumed a forward rush was made by Waihou which ended in Miss I. Burke securing a goal. After this the game became very fast, and on several occasions each team seemed on the point of scoring, but no goals resulted, the game thus ending, Waihou 2, Ohaupo nil. Mr C- Kenny of Hamilton, gave every satisfaction as referee. The Ohaupo ladies played with a good deal of dash, and should give a good account of themselves by-and-by, while the Waihou ladies showed increased form and promise to wind up the season well, as they are unbeaten up to the present. A return match will be played at Waihou before the close of the season.
