(From our own correspondent) The social in aid of the school funds, •which was held on Wednesday night, was the. most successful and best attended that has been yet in the district. There were, fully 150 people present. One room of the school was used for ! dancing, while another was ' fitted up for ping pong and cards, and mirth and jollity prevailed in both I departments,—-the only drawback being the over crowding. The dance music was supplied by Messrs Smith, Tonge, James and Misses Kneebone, while the duties of M.C. were performed by Mr Smith in a highly satisfactory manner. During the evening the following musical programme was gofae through : Pianoforte overture, Misses Kneebone ; song * Jessie’s Dream, 3 Miss Scott, who was encored ; song,—local hits— ‘ Can’t make it out,’ Mr Snaith. Mr Imith showed his poetical genius in composing a catchy song re factory, directors and other local celebrities. Song Mr Scott, recitation ‘Shamus O’Brien,’ Mr Keaiaeyjsong ‘Asleep in the Deep,’ Mr Mclndoe. Mr Mclndoe, who was in capital form rendered his song most feelingly, and in demand to repeated encores sang * Off to Philadelphia’ and ‘ Powder Monkey Jim,’ Beading, Mr Brown; song, The IrisE Barber,’ Mr J. Brown; song, ‘Belle Mahone’ Mrs Kneebone; song, ‘Policeman’s Life’ Mr Osbome; .Duet ‘ Chiming Bells’ Mr and Mrs Smith.. Mr Haw- » kins gave several selections on his gramophone which w%re highly appreciated. Mr Manuel, in the place of the Chairman, Mr M. Cronin, who was unable to be present through ill ness, in a happy speech returned thanks to the ladies of Manawaru who provided a recherche supper; to friends in TeArohawho assisted by giving groceries, etc, towards the supper; and to all those who in any way assisted to make the social a success. 'The social resulted in a nett profit to •the committee of £5 17s. The school committee have purchased—the Education Board paying Italf the cost—-a 301 b bell for the school. ‘.The bell was placed in position yesterday evening by Mr J. Franklin and Mr Keaney, and this morning its peals rang out over the district to hurry the children on their way. It is the intention of the school committee to get part of the play ground ploughed sand laid down in grass this spring. A fortnight ago the members of the Homan Catholic community held a meeting, when it was decided to erect a church in the district. The site agreed on is an acre section on Mr Cox's property, opposite the factory. A strong committee has been formed and already the subscriptions are well •on to £IOO. The Her Father Kehoe intends celebrating mass at 11 o’clock in the schoolroom on Sunday next, August 16 th. , Settlement is still going on. Mr Mohing, of Hokianga, has purchased the section of Mr Cox’s, next to Mr Manuel’s, and intends erecting a residence at once. l ’ < Mr Hewin’s house is almost finished and Mr W. I/usby is busy with additions to his residence. Mr J. Bobinson is carting out the timber for the forge which Mr J. Franklin is going to have erected in the township.
