FOOTBALL

TE AROHA V. WAiHOU. WIN FOR WAIHOU. To say that great interest was taken in the above match is speaking mildl}\ There was a very good attendance, not a few of whom belonged to, the gentler sex. The game was played on the Recreation ground, which was in very fair condition, while the elements were also of a - favourable nature. When the two teams were lined out it was seen that the Waihou Club had a strong combination in the field, and as the game progressed this opinion was borne out, as from start to finish they played a hard and fast game, their tackling, running and passing being a great improvement on past performances. Te Aroha was well represented, but stronger teams have been seen out for the blue and whites during this season, and several well-known players were missing. During most of the- first spell the maroon ana golds had their opponents pinned in their 25. From a forward rush Bennett secured the oval, and by a dodgy run crossed the line. The kick at goal proved a failure. On resuming after half time play was fast and furious, the blue and whites doing their utmost to score, and the leather was for the first 15 minutes close to their opponents’ line. Eventually the ball coming out of a scrum Sorrenson secured and grounded the ball behind. The major points not being added the scores were even. Excitement now grew high. Waihou rallied, and although the local team did their utmost the visitors had them in difficulties, Currie time after time getting them out of a tight place. From a loose rush Johnson followed up fast and scored. The attempt at goal was a failure, the game ending Waihou 5, Te Aroha 3. Mr Power acted as referee and P. Timmins and W. Everitt held the line flags.

That most responsible position—-full-back—has been entrusted to the local man, D. Currie, in the ThamesAuckland match on Saturday nextThames has made a very wise selection, as time alone will show. At Saturday’s Te Aroha-Waihou match one man was ordered off the field, one was injured and had to retire, while another player had to leave the field for reasons best known to himself.

There is likely to be a sequel to the unseemly conduct of a squad of youths at the close of the match on Saturday last.

The football match between the representatives of Thames and Karangahake played at Parawai on Saturday afternoon, resulted in a win for the local team by five points to three—a goal to a try. The game was not a good exposition of Rugby football, but it was willing enough.
