THE WAIHI SOUTH A cable message was reoeived yesterday that the negotiations for the sale of the Waihi South Mine, which is now under offer in London, are being carried on. The local negotiations are in the hands of Mr R. 0. Greenwood'and Mr Hugh Campbell. The area consists of 127 acres comprising the Birthday, New Year, Christmas Box, and Mackay No. 1 claims. A shaft is now going down, and at a depth of 50 feet it is in a ni'SStelass of light andesite rock.

OOOLGARDIE.

THe directors of the Londonderry mine, West Australia, report that an unsettled question relating to Casey’s, interest in, the mine prevents completion of the trust, Colonel North, the Earl of Fingal, and Mr T. Hewitt Myring, directors of the Company, are prepared to execute the trust unless shareholders desire to litigate. The directors propose to comply with the demand of Australian vendors for allotment of the balance of vendors’ shares, though advised the case is full of suspicion. Lord Fingal objects to the erection of machinery, until the mine is further proved. He regards the prospects Of success small. Only £30,000 of working capital isavailable, irrespective of Colonel North’s.-trust. A meeting is called for the 16th.

WAIHI-SILVERTON.

STONE WORTH £7 TO £8 PER TON. - The future prospects of the WaihiSilverton mine continue to improve as the stone cut in the low level was assayed, and proved to be worth from between £7 to £8 per ton on the average.'; • . The manager, in his report, stated that during the month very good pro gress has. been msde with the main crosscut from the shaft. It is now in a distance of 193 feet and the reef should be in hand any moment. The also reported upon the timbering of the drives and the work of driving to the kilns. A contract was let for six steel percolating vats at £56 each. Should the present fine weather continue,!,the manager expects to be able to start crushing by the end of October. ; ‘

GOLD MINING SURVEYS

Wellington, Saturday. In his report of gold mining surveys, Mr G. Mueller, chief surveyor for the Auckland district, states that owing to the re’cent rich discoveries at Coromandel, and the continued handsome yields in the Waihi and other mining centres, there has been a great revival of the gold mining industry during the past year. The total plans received, and surveys authorised have been for sixty-two claims, of a total area of 1752 acres These claims were surveyed at a cost of nearly 9s per acre, or a total cost at schedule rates of £767 18s 7d. »In addition to these, five areas have been surveyed for coal mining leases, with an area of 1098 acres, and at a total cost of £179 2s.

Mr John Howell, formerly manager of the Broken Hill Proprietory, and formerly of the Waiorongomai at Te Aroha. has been appointed managing director of the Kalgoorlie gold mines, situated on the Boulder line of lode, a few blocks north of the Coolgardie Company’s properties. Mr John Andrews, one of the vendors, has been appointed local director. The pioperfcy acquired includes McLeay’s and Arnott’s blocks, an isvverv’rich in ore.
