An interesting return has been compile 1 showing the respective imports into New Zealand during the twelve monthly periods en. ling 80th September, 1885, 1886, 1887, and 1888. Fimn this it appear^ that imports, the vahv of which in 1885 wa5£7,439,K4«, Ml in 1836 to £6 982,120, in 18«7 sti'l further to £0,225,058. >m-l in 1888 lowest of nil, viz , to £6,027,209, this last bcincr the smallest import noted For sixteen ye.jr«, or since 1872. O:i the other hand, the exports, after a sli-ht retrogression in 1885, have speedily and substantially increased, until this year they exceed tho imports by the large sumoF £1,371,920, the yearly totals being respectively as follows :' 1885, £6.712,211; 1886, £6,572,570 ; 1887, £7,044,237 ; 1888, £7,399,129. It m«y be added that tha respective Customs receipts duiing those Four twelve monthly periods were : 1885, £1,431.309 5 1886, £1,322,921 ; 1887, £1,263,261 ; 1888. £1,312,812.
