FANCY DRESS BALL. Waiorongomai.

The above ball, so long looked forward to, and so much talked of, came off on last Monday night in the Waiorongomai Public Hall ; and was an immense saccess. Waiorongomai residents naturally felt proud at having taKen the lead in this direction, it being the first fancy dress ball that has been held in the disI trict. Active preparations for the event i have been in progress for a number of weeks past, the result being that tho 1 arrangements in connection therewith wore of of a most perfect character, and reflected great credit on the indefatigable committee of management entrusted with the carrying out of the affair, viz, : Messrs Littlejohn, Mace, May, and Jen I nings. The Hall was most tastefully decorated with flags and evergreens, etc., for the occasiou, by Messrs Cronin, Jennings, Littlejohn, and Popperwell, a numbor of Chinese lanterns, of all sizes and designs, adding greatly to the effect. Some dozen or more motto's were hung around the ITall such as, for example, the following : " In grand arra} r , Happy and gay, We're here, The 23rd of May." "Rule Brittania." "Erin go Bragh," etc., whilst across the full breadth of tho stage was stretched a banner bearing the inscription in large capitals, " Welcome." Dancing commenced at 8.30., was kept up with much spirit till 6 a.m , the floor being in splendid order for the votaries of terpsichore, and the music was provided by Messrs Quintan, (piccolo) and Whitehouse, (piano and cornet). Mr Jas. May carried out the onerous duties devolving upon him as M.C. in his usual efficient style. A general suspension of dancing took place shortly before mid night, for supper, and at twelve o'clock an immense rich cake, beautifully iced, and termed the Queen's Cake, was cut, when the whole company stood up and ushered in the Queen'B Birthday, by singing in real hearty style tho National Anthem, thus demonstrating the loyalty, love and respect with which Her Majesty is regarded by her subjects at Waiorongomai. The supper was provided on a most liberal scale, and included in addition to the more substantial viands, jellies, blanchemanges, pastry, fruit, etc., of all description. Tea, coffee, and lemonade, being- on hand, all night through. The providing of the supper wa« undertaken by the following: Mesdames Adams, Jennings, D. Samson and W. Samson, and was most creditable to these ladies. The piano was kindly lent for the occasion by Mr Hirst, and flags, etc, by Messrs Flood and iJettis. Two coaches, crowdei with passengers, conveyed Te Aroha

residents, in addition to other conveyances. There were about one hundred and twenty persons present. We append herewith as complete a list of names as we have been able to obtain ; should there be any omissions it is unintentional on our part. During the eveningseveral songs were given and Messrs Smith and Satnson danced a hornpipe. We have no intention of venturing an opinion as to who was the belle of the ball, but will leave the ladies to decide that (probably much-vexed question) for themselves. As may be imagined the hall presented an exceedingly gay appearance on the occasion ; and nvxny of the dresses and costumes displayed very great tasfce and fertility of resource on the part of those by whom selected, and no doubt deserve special mention, but as in the case of the belle it is a thankless office to make distinctions.
