The Aroha AND Ohinemuri News AND UPPER THAMES ADVOCATE.

' This nbove all — to thine own self be true An\ it must follow as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.' — Shakespeare.

SATURDAY, MAY 21, 1887.

In another column will be found a repoit of sonic recent proceedings of the Thames IT;u hour Boanl, by which it will be ser^n that body are making an effort to obtain entire control ol the livers emptying into Thames Harbour. A more bnrcfaced attempt to encroach on the lights of others could scarcely be conceived, and the ground put forward for attempting to obtain control oL" the livers rc(VtT<yl lo irost iiudequate to suppoit such ;i cool piop<sal as thi.t oi." gi\ing the Tliamoa

Board such autocratic powers. Whilst wo do not believe tlio members of the House would 'ever consent to sanction suefh a glaring piece of injustice, still it is highly necessary that prompt steps should be t ikon to defeat the plans of. the Thames Bonn!, such as already proposed ly the Ohinctmui and Fiako County Councils. Wo would lotnind our readers that the tea meeting and inu-ioal enteitaininent in connection with the Weslcyan Church, unavoidably postponed- on the 10th inst. owing to tho scvciitv of the weather, will now be held in the To Aroha Public Hall on Tuesday evening next, 24th inst. \\ c are given to undei stand that an excellent programme has been aivangod for the ontcrtainnu'nl, and a leally good spread will be piovi-led for the tea. The proceeds will he dovoted to tho. church paisonage funmhing fund, and we hope this oll'ort will nicel will) the hearty rot>ponhe it deserve-, and that there will be a very large gathoiing on tho occasion. Sir liobeit Stout has been le-eleeted Pi evident of the Dunedin Freet bought Association. A public meeting was held in tho To Aroha Wcsleyan Church on last Thursday evening for the purposo of considering the advisability of providing incieased accommodation i'oi the congregation. Rev. S. Lawry resident minister of the ciivuit presided, and called upon Mr Buttle as convener, to generally state what had I<hl up to the piesent mooting being called. Air Buttle informed those present that the necessity for pioviding increased accommodation had been under coiibideiation for some tune past, and now it was i'elt to be imperative that some steps should be lakun in tho matter, with us little d.^lay as possible, as, siuco Mr Liuiy had come amonght them, on scvcial occasions persons had to turn away i!rom the chinch doois, unable to obtain seats. At the last quartet ly meeting a committee was appointed to deal with the subject. This committee had met and discussed matters, and requested him to communicate with Mr E. Y. Cox, and asceitain what value he sot on his corner allotment ami small cottage theicon, with fionlage to Whitaker street, (sepai atod from the existing site by a road). Mr Cox had named L75 as the mice, part of which could lem.iin as a mortgage. Air Buttle stated the committee were unanimous in advising that the site be procured, and considered the piico most libeial. Me^rb Buttle and Lavcry (members of the committee) spoke in suppoit of the decision, the committee had airived at. Otheis present who took pait in the discussion that followed, expressed the opinion that the price asked for tho site referred to was far beyond its maiket value, and that in any case to simply lemove across the roul would not bewoith doing, and the advantage to be gained be in no way commensurate with the expense, that if a move wcic made at all, it should ha to a centra! Mte right in the heart of the township, as the ground rent, etc., would be the same fora site in a good position, as an infoiior one. Failing a better site than that ief erred to being prociued on reasonable teims, the opinion was expressed that at a small outlay the approaches to the present site could be vastly improved, street lamps provided, etc., and much done to impiove the existing state of things. All pi (wnt wereunanimnus ih to the necessity for ino eased accommodation being pro\ided. Ultimately it was lesolved to d( j fei Hie mattd, in ordor that fuither enquiries might be made with i expect to sites a\ nibble, etc., and another meeting of the committc will bo held on Tuesday next. A miscellaneous entertainment given by visitors, assisted by local talent, took place in the Public Hall, To An.ha, last i evening, the programme (published in last issue) was an attractive one, and the various items ex«-elienty rendered, many of the pieces being heartily encored. The very unsettled state of the weather, and the'affair having boon postponed from last Monday evening, both militated against tho attendance which was not so large as might fairly have been looked for, and as tho entcitainment deserved. Rev. Mr Maishall, in moving a coidi.il vote of tl'anks (which was carried with acclamation), to all who had assisted in tho entertainment, expressed the great pleasure it afforded him to see visitors take such interest in local affairs and so willing to . render any assistance they could in fur- S Iheranco thereof.
