Earthquakes at Nice.
Judge dillies was in the Riviera during the earthquakes, and writing to a friend in Rothesay (Scotland) he says :— " My daughter and I have just had a grand experience in earthquakes. We went up to Nice on Tuesday morning to see the last day of the Carnival there, which we enjoyed very much, being well peppered with confetti, and saw the grand fireworks at night. We remained there that night, and were woke up in the morning by the plaster in the hotel falling down about our ears, and everything rolling and rocking like a ship at sea. When we dressed and got out, we found the whole population in the streets — some in night dresses, some in blankets, some in their masquerade dresses of the night before, some sitting weeping or vociferating, some in cabs half dressed, some carrying bird cages or leading pet dogs ; plaster down in all directions, and cornices from the houses and the walls cracked. This was a little after six in the morning. We took a walk round looking at the damage done, and having managed to get some bread and butter and coffee in a smoking-room, and finding there would be little chance of getting a decent breakfast we started off home to this place at 8.38. As we walked up to the station a sligh shock occurred which made all those who remained in their houses run out. On i arrival here we found no damage done, but six miles off, at a little village, two people were killed and some wounded by an old tower falling and smashing in some houses. We went out and saw it next day. The ' 'quake ' has been much more serious further along the coast, but the papers have made the most of it. I send these few lines so that you may uot think that we have been swallowed up by the 1 'quake.'"
