Requested ready dealt with. k Tramway to Bailey's Plant, Karangahake. — Mr McDonald Scott sent, in a letter stating that the mines interested in the construction of the above-men-tioned tramway were prepared to subscribe a -sum of £150 if the county would find £50, and this would entitle them to receive the Government subsidy, of £200, which would bring the amount up to £400. The work could be carried on tinder the auspices of the Council, and when- completed the. line could be handed over to the battery company as previously agreed upon. The Chairman said the Council never agreed to hand the tramway over to the battery company, and he did not consider it would be fair to the public to do so. Cr Moore thought that when complete the tramway should de dealt with in the same way as the Thames County dealt with the Moanataiari tramway, Thames. It was let by public tender, and was given to the man who agreed to convey quartz at the cheapest rate per ton, and to keep the line in thorough repair. Cr Corbet I was in favour of handing the line over to the Battery Company, who would for their own sakes transport quartz at a cheap rate. As to the value of Raily's plant he believed that it was the beet milling process on the Peninsula, because it had saved bullion of a lower value than had ever been saved previously by any battery process. Cr Moore moved, and Cr Walsh seconded that application be at once made to the mines department for the following subside*, -\'iz., £'200 for tramway to the reduct'en \ioi-ks; £100 for the Monasten tramway, and £300 for the extension o. tie County road to the Adeh:u- mine. Gold Duty.— Mr F. C Dean, clerk to the Borough Council, Thames, wrote denying all knowledge of the manner in which the gold duty accruing from the treatment of Ohinemuii quaitz at the smelting works, had been dealt with. The Chairman said that he had made all due enquiry when at the Thames last week, respecting the above. At the Bank of New Zealand he was shown the register where Mr Lawe, manager of the smelting company, staled that the gold in question was from the Borough of Thames, and there was no doubt whatever that the-duty had been paid over to that body. He had written to the Treasury requesting that a sum of £G0 be deducted from the gold duty, payable to the Borough of Thames, and be placed to the credit of the Ohinemuri County. Financial. — The report of the Finance Committee recommended payment of the sum of £14 13s, and infoimed the Council that the overdraft was now reduced to £300. On the motion of Cr Strange it was resolved that the Chairman be authorised to interview the manager of the Bank of Kew Zealand, Thames, with a view to taking over the Ohinemuri County's proportion of the Thames County's overdraft.
