London, October 1. Hanlan and Beach had a long discussion on the 27th with reference to a challenge The Australian firmly refuged to meet the Canadian except on the Parramatta River, stating that he would row him there and lay £1,000 to £800. Han Inn explained the delay in his arrival by declining that he was not in good health, and deferred the journey to England until Beach had beaten the Americans. Hanlan has since published * challenge in the " Spor'sman " without eliciting a reply from Beach. Outrages continue to be reported from various parts of the South-west of Ireland. General Buller, having completed his tour in Kerry and Clare, returned to Killarney, where,- ie ia believed, he is elaborating a report to the Government. Speaking at the opening of the Conservative Club at St Albans on the 22nd, Lord Salisbury referred to the uuity of the Conservative party, and strongly condemned the obstruction of business by the Irieh member* Ret erring to the land question, he declared that the cole means of securing social order was to multiply the small oultivators of the soil. Such policy could not be carried out at once, but it should alwaya be kept in view. Spoftorth, the cricketer, was married yesterday at Breadsall, near Derby, to Mies Phillips Marsh Cudman, daughter of Nr Jo^epb Codman, ot Breadeall. Bonnor was be?t man, Thore was a large assemblage of villagers aod friends, but no other member of the Auj-tralian Eleven was present. The village was dtcorated for the occasion.
