Adeliadk, April 17. — On the arrival of the Orient Company's R.M.S. Chiinborago at this bort yesterday afternoon, tho medical oflicor of the vessel reported to the health authorities that there was a case of dtnall pox on board. The patient i8 landed, and place id quarantined.
Melbourne, April 17.— It is understood that Mr John Douglas, Commissioner of New Guinea, has submitted a countermemorandum regaiding the best modo of administering that territory, and that the various colonial Governments are in consultation on the subject. Mr Douglas has left Melbourne for Sydney.
Melbourne, April 17. — Rear- Admiral Tryon is at present in Melbourne consulting with the authorities on the subject of the defence of the colony. Ho has been informed that a conference will assemble at Sydnoy on the 26th April for the considera tion of a general scheme of colonial defence. The Premiers of New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland will be present. It ia probable that the question of the administration of New Guinea will also be discussed. MrHayter, Government Statist, in his agricultural statistics of the colony of Vic toria for the past season, gives the wheat yield as averaging S'99 bushels per acre. The Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, in their grain circular just issued, adopt this basis, and estimate, alter allowing for the wants of the colony, that twenty-nine thousand tons will be available for export. The demand for New South Wales and Queensland, however, completely absorbs the surplus, hence they anticipate a gradual rise in prices.
