De Lesseps has left Paris for Panama to look after the affairs of the canal. Portugal has seized two French stations on the Gulf of Guinea. "L'Umvers" of October 17th published a telegram from Father Martin stating that 700 Christians were massacred at An am. Among the victims were M. Chatelet, the missionary, and ten native priests. President Grevy has officially announced that he will enter the coming contest for the Presidency. The marriage of Prince Waldemar, third son of King Christian of Denmark, and Princess Marie, daughter of the Due de Cliartres took place in the private chapel of the Chatean DEn, residence of the Count de Paris, on October 22nd. The day was observed in Copenhagen as a general holiday.

The French in Tonquin. Advices from Tonquin to the Paris ' Temps ' of Oct. 19, describe the situation as very gloomy. Despatches on the 22nd say, the French troops recently made a rsconnoissance from Honghoa to Huanquan, and found formidable numbers of the Black Flags in the vicinity of these places. Three thousand fresh troops are about to leave France for Tonquin.
