Ptoiessur John Smith, who hap been for thirty yearn connected with the University, has died, and had a large funeral. Government are taking step-* to regulate the supply of explosives by prohibiting the importation for certain periods. Only a small quantity of rain has fallen — fcarcely half an inch. It is very much wanted in the country. Great pieparations are being made for Cardinal Moran's reception early next month. H. M S. Miranda ha* gone to Samoa. Tht Nelunn leavts port on Tuesday. Brisb ne, October 16.— Th« water supply in Brisbane and country di-trictH is in a serious condition. The mattt-r h»s be^n brought under the notice of the Govern ment. The second reading of the Pacific Inland Labourers BUI was passed without a divi -ion. One of theclauses limits the introduction to five years.
