The " Melbourne Sportsman " thus explains how Welcome Jack was omitted from the Melbourne Cup nominations:— " It appears that Mr E. E. Jones, who was commissioned to enter Welcome Jack for the Melbourne Cup and other important races for which he was eligible, filled up a form at the A. J.C. office on Monday, but, being informed that it was necessary to enter on separate forms for each race, he did so. Owing to an oversight, however, the entries of Welcome Jack, while being handed in by the nominator from the desk at which they were written, became displaced, and one — that for the Melbourne Cup — was left where it had been made out. When the full lists appeared on Tuesday, and Welcome Jack was nofc in eluded, Mr Jones inquired as to the cause, and was surprised to hear that the horse had not been entered. The bundle of entrance forms was immediately gone through without throwing any light on the case, but at length the missing one was found on the desk where it had been made out the previous afternoon. Of course nothing could be done in the matter by the A. J.C. only to write and acquaint the Victorian authorities with full particulars of the mistake." The Victoria Racing Club mot and considered the matter, but refused to accept the nomination. Clarence was among the starters for the Sydney Tattersall's Grand National Steeplechase, won by Progress. He was served up a warm favourite, and left the paddock at 7 to 4, but Corrigan, who rode him, and Cree, the rider of Joe's Indian Queen II., both mistook the course. There was great hooting when they returned to scale, and Corrigan, losing his temper, rode up to the crowd and struck savagely at several persons with his whip. The stewards held an investigation into the matter, and it was decided that both Corrigan and Cree ha\d been guilty of a gross error of judgment only. Progress ran in the colours of Mr Montague H. Smith, and was ridden by Roddy Mclvor. Papers to hand containing the entries for the Melbourne Cup show that Welcomo Jack is not nominated for either that event or the Champion Stakes. His name, however, appears in the list of entries for the Caulfield Cup, Great Metropolitan Stakes, and Hawkesbury Autumn Handicap.
