AUCKLAND RACING CLUB WINTER MEETING.

Splendid weather greeted the Auckland Racing Club for their inaugural Winter Meeting at Ellerslie on June 6. Combined i with the firsfc-claes programme put forth by the Club, this has had the effect of attracting a large crowd of spectators, and, as usual, th« fair sex are well represented. MAIDEN STEEPLECHA8E of lOOsovs, with a sweep of 3sovs. each to go to second horse. Four-year-olds, list 41b; flve-year-olds. Hat 121b ; six and aged, 12st 31b. About three and a-half miles. Mr W. Tercival ns ch g St. Dunstan, 12st31b(Rae) 1 Mr D. D. Harford's ch g Hawthorn, 12st 71b, 41b over (Harper) 2 Mr J. Marshall's br g King, 12afc 31b (Hope) • ... 0 Mr H. B. Webster's Comanche, list 121b (Crassy) 0 Fair Play, Diomedes, Shotover, andFly were scratched Betting : 2 to 1 on King ; 4 to 1 St. Dunstan ; 5 to 1 the others. St. Dunstun went off with the lead, followed by King. Hawthorn, however, soon ran into first place, but on going up the hill wa« deposDd by Comanche while King brought up the rear. On reaching the ciest uf the hill. Hawthorn again took up the running with St. Dunstan second. At the fenoe lower down, the leader baulcked and St. Dunstan showed Kingthe way over the stone wall. King, however, negotiated the next jump first, and then led over the sod fence aiso. At the water jump King balked repeatedly, and while he was engaged here along with Comanche, who alf-o balked, St. Dunstan and Hawthorn went their way The\ had actually got to the back of the course, Hawthorn leading, before King Oomancbepasstd the water. The remainder of the race was possessed of little interest. St. Dunstan and Hawthorn passed each other several times, while King and Comanche again baulked at the water, and finally had to retire. In coming down the hill on the last round, St. Dunstan went to the front, and won rather easily. Time, llmins. 3secs. Totalisator dividend, £3 ISs.

Messrs Duder's b g Derby, aged ... 1 Mr J Chad wick's b g Robin Hood, aged 2 Mr F. G. Wbiting's b g Miza, aged ... 3 Chevalier and Pipi were scratched. Robin Hood was the favourite. This was Derby's race from start to finish, the other two not having a °how in it. Derby was the first to get away, and Miza followed hard behind, but baulked at the second hurdle This gave Derby a strong lead and he led past the stand 100 yards ahead of Miza, while Robin Hood was another 100 yards further to the rear. This he pulled up however, before reaching the fourth hurdle from the stand, where he ran into second place, while Derby, going easily, maintained the van. Although Robin Hood lessoned the distance between them, I erby won hard held, Major a bad third. Time, 4min."53sec. Totalisator dividend, £2 11s. Hope), Diomedes (Honnor), Julia Ann (Fresvin), Ngata (Edgcombe), Jedwater ((Toodman), and Reck lets {Fergus) also ran. This wa3 a really well- contested race every toot of the way. Macaroni took the lead at the stand, with Revenge well up. At the back of the course Fairplay showed in front, while Piomedes trailed off a long way to the rear Coming down the hill the position was unchanged, Quilp and Fairplay being third and fourth. New Year ran into tirst place, and led over the sod bank, followed by Quilp, Fairplay, Whalebone, and Ngata. Fairplay pioneered the field over the water jump, with Quilp and New Year 2nd and 3rd. Revenge baulked at the stone fence. Fairplay ran off at the water jump, but was brought 1 back. Going up the hill New Year was still leading, with Ngrata a close second, Whalebone third, Macaroni fourth. Theonly change that took place until rbe water jump was parsed was a leversal of Macaroni and Whalebone's positions. Ngata soon afterwards went ahead, while Revenge, Diomedes, and Quilp baulked at the water jump. Coming down the hill for the last time, Ngata was leading by half a leugth, New Year, Macaroni, Whalebone, and Fair Play well up. An exciting iace up the straight. At the last hurdle, Nyatarun round it. while Mew Year and his? rider came a cropper. Macaroni raced in the winner, Whalebone and Nga'a close behind Latter disqualified. Rider is badly shaken, and New Year broken down. Time, 9min 19;ec. Totalizator dividend, £5 L7s. Macaroni, Jedwater, and Fairplay were scratched. This was an exceedingly interesting and really we'l contested race, and St. Dunstan's second victory proved highly popular. There were £746 on the totalisator, 157 on the winner, and the dividend was £4 8s. The train did not start for fully half an hour afterwards, and when it did, the patience of the travellers had still to be exercised by reason of excessive delays a Remuera and Newmarket. The trip to town occupied full three-quarters of an hour. ,
