Mining Inspector v. Wm. Roycroft : Defendant was charged with cutting timber Without a license at Waiorongomai. Defendant admitted he had no license, but staged he had been cutting for a man named Robertson (holder of a timber license, but who had now left the district) by arrangement, and thought he could do so. Fined\ls without costs. Mining Inspector v. Andrew Smith : Charged with cutting timber for others, not being the holder of a miner's right Defendant stated that he was merely a visitor staying with previous defendant who was his son-in law, and received no pecuniary benefit for any timber he had cut. The Inspector did not wish to press the charge, as the man appeared to have acted in ignorance of the law. Case dismissed ; the Warden remarking it ought to be known that any one cutting ( timber must have a miner's right, a timber license, or be cutting as the paid seiyant of some oue who was the holdor of a timber license.
