MINING NEWS.

BA.TTTCny.~- The flninl^m rpfnrn<», for tho week en -liny: Saturday, October 4th, wore as follows :—: — 07.. dwt. •New Find— BB trucks 408 0 Tailings 216 0 624 0 Colonist— ss trucks 184 5 Canadian— 3s „ 90 0 Premier— 2o „ 84 0 Tnilinga 9 0 Lucky Hit— l 2 (rucks 28 0 ,The following are the week's gold re- ' turn 3 : 055. dwt. New Find— (retorted) 89 0 Canadian 15 5 Premier— from trial crushing ... 12 0 Lucky Hit 9 17 The retorting for the Colo'rst wil! not take place until the end of the usual ■ period of four weeks.

New Find. — The upper working* generally are looking well. The stopes on the INo. 2 roof, both nort.hw.-ird ami towards the Diamond Gully boundary, are yielding goo I stuff, and from those in the other parts of the mine fair crushing dirt is also coming. Good progress is being made with the winze in the Arizona level, the reef as for as it has been sunk on having contrary to anticipations, proved quite dry. The depth is now about 30 feet, and there is still the same large body of quurtz with a fair show of gold all through it. An extensive block of payable ground is here being opened up. There is no change to report in the low level.

Colonist. — The winze that was started in the No. 2 level south of the crosscut some two weeks since, ami which had to be given np for the time owing to heavy water, lias now been drained by the low level, and sinking is again goini* on. From the intermediate workings in the north winze paying stone continues to be got, but it is not quite equ.il to that obtained during the previous week or two. The stuff from the upper workings shows up at the battery much as usual.

• Canadian — Work i 9 now beingcarried on in the block south of the winze, between the No. 1 and low levels. The stuff put through at the battery from this block so far looks rather better than the crush ings of the few previous weeks from the upper workings, and it is not unlikely that a consi Jerable portion of the block between the winze and the Hero buck reef 'will pay for stoping out.

Diamond 1-JullV. — Good progress has latterly been mads^in the construction of the hopper, <and, in a fortnight or little more, both it and the shoot will be completed. No stone has been broken. |down in the mine during the week, but' a good deal of the reel: has been stripped, and this work will be continued until the shoot and hopper are ready for the reception of stuff, by which time a large quantity will be in readiness for the battery. Waiorongomai. — The intermediate drive is being pushed ahead, and gold continues to show well in the fa c. From this level a lise has been put up to the surface and stoping operations will presently be commenced. The reef is here of a good size, and it is expected that in a fortnight or so a sufficient quantity of stuff will be broken out to form, with that, now on hand a fair crashim?. Should the show of gold continue as it has been during the last ten days, a handsome yield may be expected. The Company's surveyor has laid off the projected new level in the Virginia City section of the claim, and it may be assumed that no time, will be lost in commencing that undertaking.

Inverness. — Work is going 1 steadily on, hut without any result of more than nsu.il importance. Gold coniimes to show in the stone coining holli trora the drive and from the stopes. A considerable quantity of stuff Uas accumulated in the hoppers, and a crushing will likely take place in a week or two.

Stau. — A drive is being put. in to cut the leader a little way below the, spot where the stone was foiiu 1 on the surface a fortnight mjo 1 . The country has proved to be a little tighter than was anticipate I, but it is expected the vein will lie in hand in another day or two,

May Qukkn. — The reef in the uppm % winze continues to look well, and some of the stone broken down .within the last few days is equal to if not better than .anything- previously got. There is about two feet of crushing stuff, ami the gold :s: s well disseminated through the solid quartz. The depth sunk is about 14ft, find a nice comptict lode is still going down. In the lower winze the reef is larger in size, but it has not latterly shown gold quite so freely as in the other. Payable stuff is, howorer, still obtained, and in appearance the stone is no less promising than it has been heretofore. Between these winzes there is a space of 100 feet or more, and there' can nardly be a doubt that when this block is operated on it will be found to yield handsomely

Lucky Hit. — Work has been om•nenc'ed on t. le J\Fa • Queen reef near the loundary of that claim. Fair prospects lave been got near the surface and a level is in contemplation to ,yive the lode v thorough trial. Tue crushing of the ".rial parcel o e stuff from the old workings v&s not quite satisFrtotory, the return 9oz 17dwts from 12 trucks being hardly p vyable.
