IN THE WOODS. (Translated from the German of Marie Forster.)
Deep in tho woods, in the twilight green, There rings and trills a wondrous song ; Tis the birds who sing for themselves alone, The whole year long. Deep in the woods, in the twilight green, The moss is tinged with purple glow, And the lovely flowera for themselves alono Unheeded blow. Oh, woodlands fair ! Oh, twilight green ! Your loneliness my heart must own. No more will I live, no more will sing For self alone. Thou, Life, through all the golden dream I hear thy voice ; thou callest me. In love and sorrow, in toil and strife, A man to be.
