The Melbourne Cup.

Melbourne, October 6. The Hon. W. Pearson's Plausible has been heavily backed for the Melbourne Cup at 25 tol. Notwithstanding the pleasant weather, the racecourse is not so well attended as usual, there only being some three thousand persons present. Free Handicap, of 60 boys ; 1 mile and a distance. An exciting race ensued, resulting in a dead heat between Leonora and Bayard, less than half a length away was Leonata. The totalisator paid a dividend of £1 19s on Leonora and £13 2s on Bayard inside, the outside one paying £1 12s and £10. Time, 2tnins 4secs. Maiden Hurdle Race, of 50 so vs., weight-for-age ; distance, 2 miles. Mr W. Broughton's eh q Hurricane, aged 1 Mr W. Y. Dennett's q q Steeldust, aged 2 Mr W. Ellingham's b m Denbigh, 5 yrs o Mr A. The totaliBator dividend was £4 14s outside, and £5 10s inside. Manricoand Paganini have been scratched for the Melbourne Cup, and Plausible is now quoted at 14 to 1. The Frenchman has been scratched for the Melbourne Cup.
