MINING NEWS.

It, is satisfactory, to have to report that the resumption of work two or tlfree weeks ago m some *of the older claims m which operations had for a time been suspended, has already been productive of good results. One of these claims is the Coquette, and m the early part of the week a discovery of importance was* made by that Company m driving through the Diamond Gully ground to reach their own. In this drive, which is close to the boundary of the two claims, the reef known as the New Find No. 2 has been struck. At the point where intersected it is about sft m thickness, and m most of the .'quarts taken out gold is visible. The reel runs for a considerable distance through both claims and the value of both properties is largely enhanced by the discovery. We hope shortly to be able to chronicle similar good news from some of the other claims that have started work

afresh. The Battery. — The heavy rain at the end of last week caused a few small slips m the tramway, thereby impeding traffic for a short time. The line was; quickly cleared, but the temporary stop- 1 page necessitated the hanging up of .some of the stampers for a few hours, as the supply of stuff m the battery hoppers chanced to be low at the time the delay occurred. Since then everything has gone on smoothly both at the battery and on the tramway. During the week the New Find has been crushing with 10 head of stampers, the Colonist with 20, the Premier and Vulcan with 5 each. The following are the returns of amalgam for the week ending : March 10th :—

The crushing of the trial lot of stuff from the Hero claim did not prove so satisfactory as was expected. From the 26 tons put through the yield was 12^ ozs retorted gold. The parcel now being treated from the Vulcan is shaping for a payable yield. The various works m connection with the new tailings plant are being vigonrously pushed on* The building is finished and the timber work for the berdans is also nearly completed. Most of the basin? will be m position next week. Other things are man advanced stage, and if no delay arises from want of material or m the forwarding of the balance ofr the machinery, the manager, Mr Adams calculates upon having everything m readiness foT a start by the end of this or early m the ensuing month. A detailed description of the plant will be given m a future issue.

New Find. — Tuere is nothing 1 oi" special importance to record concerning this mine. In most of the workings the show is as satisfactory as usual, an<l operations at the battery toll of no diminution m the average yield from th ' crushing stuff. linking is being proceeded with m the winze on tue No. 2 reef, but the close nnd compact character of the reef prevents very rapid progress. The new low level is still m tight country.

Colonist. — Stoping is now going on m the north end of the low level, ami a large and steady supply of good crushing stuff is being got out, the reef beinu' much the same m size and quality as met with m the drive. In the south end the lode m the face is still strong and compact, though for the last few feet it has perhaps shown a little less freely than formerly. This falling off, however, if such it may be called, is likely to be of very temporary duration, for m a short distance the drive will be under that part where the best stuff was got m the level above, and there is little reason to doubt that m the lower workings the same class of stone will be found. The sinking of the winze from the upper level was much hindered by the recent, wet weather, but good progress is now buing made. A rise will shortly be commenced from the low level to meet the winze, and when these works are completed the manager will have no difficulty m keeping up for a length of time to come a steady supply of quartz for as many stampers as can be had at the battery. Canadian. — Outside work having been completed the breaking out of the trial parcel of stone from the face m the upper Colonist level is being proceeded with. The reef continues much the same m size and appearance as it was m the Colonist mine near the boundary. Fair payable stone was there got, and there is every reason to believe that the stuff now being got out will be of equal quality. As soon as this has been proved an increase will be made m the staff, and other works taken m hand. Vm<CAN. — The trial crushing gives prqmise of a payable return. Should the yield come up to the expectations formed of it from present appearances a.t the battery, tt.e large paddock of stuff now on hand at the claim will no doubt be forwarded io the mill for treatment as soon as the opportunity offers. May Queen.— The low figure obtained for the forfeited shares m this Company, sold by auction on Saturday last, cannot be regarded as a fair standard by which to estimate the true value of the property. The ground lies man excellent locality, and a fair show of gold has, we believe, already been got m it. Now that defaulting shareholders have been weeded out. an<J new blood infused, it may be expected that the prospecting of the claim will be vigorously proceeded with. Phcenix.— The vein has still a very promising look and shows a fair sprinkling of gold, but the stuff broken out during the week has not been of such good quality as some formerly got. There is no ; reason however to suppose that the falling off is oilier than temp-

orary, and judging^from the present appearance of the vein stone as good as fthat previously obtained may be dropped ' updh at any time. ' -
