Gum digging on the ranges some sixteen miles distant from Aroha is now being carried on by the Maoris. There general impecunious condition has no doubt made this a necessity We are pleased to know that our local knight of the hammer, Mr G. S. O'Halloran, has gone into the gum business with a will. Not only has Mr O'Halloran set a large number of Maoris to work gum digging for him, but he has started a general. store at the diggings and put on a team of pack horses to bring m the gum. The gum is being got on Government land, so that there is no obstacle m the way to prevent Europeans who may be on the look out for a job from engaging m the pur-
