OUR MINES.

The New Find, —Mr Adams recei red instructions last Week to construct the necessary connection from the low level of this mine, with the No. 2 engine grade of the tramway ; the plan formerly submitted to from the self-acting grade of tramway to admit of the county trucks being used, is found to be unnecessary. A shoot can be made 380 feet iv length, which will take the quartz from the mine tramway, at the low leveldirect to the main tramway. Thi» shoot may also be used to send dowa the quartz from the Diamond Gully. The cost of the erection of this shoofc will be less than one-half of the sum required to complete the tramway and shoot as fint proposed.

Eukbka. — The stone from the loir level improves in quality as the drive approaches the winzes ; the quartz has a more kindly appearance, and is of the same curly nature as that taken from the winzes. This mine is farther from the tramway than any of the mines already opened, and who have quartz ready for crushing. Now that the New Find Company are likely to omit laying the branch tramway we would suggest a much cheaper plan. One that vronld meet the requirements of the mine equally well would Ue to erect a wire tram from the mine to a hopper at the main tramway ; the length of this would be about 17 chains, and no engineering difficulty is in the way. The line could be worked with one brake, and trucks to hold 6sor 7 cwt. might be used. The idea of a wire tram should be carefully considered by the Eureka Company, as the cost of this would be easily met and when once erected would be sufficient to convey euou^h quartz to keep 15 head of htamps at work.

Colonist. — Sinking the wiuze» still continues, and the quartz maintains the same favourable appearance.

Pukmier. — The only work in the mine i8 the rise from No. ] level to the surface. Inverness. — The re«.-f in the low level rime still continues to maintain the snme mxc from 2 to 3 feet, about a third of a dirfh of ru hhly quartz taken from the free was washed on Wednesday and contained from 2 to 3dwtt of free gold, while nearly each It tlu stone in the di^h >showed goK.

Phchmx — The men engaged in forming the tramway have laid l>are two leaders in this claim. Nv.ir the Inverness boundary seveial very fair stone* showing gold were found, and fair prospects were crushed from others.

WisßuiiKo. — T'-e mvn are busily employed at the hopper ami shoot, and trill be enabled to fmi*ih in abouf 10 days. Moa am) Ai.phvp^t -The nianager has got men employed »t various plucea in the various c amis proifucting work".

Welcomk Liccn^d Holding. — The ton of quartz 'aken from this claim on Tue."lay 1 tat, for crushing was finished at the Alburuid Bittery yesterday, and jfare thf splendid return of ihirty-ei^ht ounrpi, fouiteen pi-tiuy weights molted gold. So satisfied now Are the shareholders of n.e pcrmaneru-y of tue run <»f works nt vi fxteuiive nature will br ,\nn\edw \y undi-riakcn At the Mime time fun, ay ciu-hin^s wil' l» e taken out wnft to make the mine pay all expenses of opening up. This Mone has been taken from the whole width of the leader, which tn improving in size a* it jjoesdown and making into a good solid sandstone formation.

COUNTY TRAMWAY. The ntand for the brake at the top of the first grade ii ereclvd, and appearg a very substantial piece of w»rk. Three •hilts of men are employed in the tunnel, and are ballasting the line with the rock broken in driving. Bntlei's Spur grade ia assuming shape. Mr Adams finds that; the whole of the work can be done bv a cutting instead of a tunnel. He has offered a bonus of £20 to the contractor if the formation is completed by Monday next. The men nre kept at work night and day, and intend to earn the bonus if they can. The donkey engine ia fixed at the foot of Butler's Spur, and is used for hauling up the rails and sleepers by means of a light wire rope and pulley. When the rails are all laid the engine is to be hauled up to the top, where it is to be set in order to haul up all the remaining part of the material. May Queen grade is ready for laying the rails at soon as they can be brought along. Premier horse grade formation will be completed in a fortnight. A bridge is to be erected over the Waterfall Creek, a contract for which is let to Egerson and party for 25s per foot ; a shoot tunnel is al-o to be driven through a point near the cud of this bridge.
