THE DUNEDIN MEETING.

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. [Special to The Sun.] DUNEDIN, December 27. Though it rained steadily nearly all night and for some time in the morning, the weather cleared before racing started and turned out a ,perfect day for the opening of the Dunedin J.C.'s summer meeting. Proceedings opened with the Summer Hurdles, for which Barrister ended up favourite. Quickly heading Take Down, who was first out, he > s practically -led from end to end, beating Jack Symons by four lengths,, with Mandrake six lengths further away. Calma fell when close up at the second last fence, but neither she nor her rider was injured. Boniform, Etta, Mazama and Lady Pallas were well supported for the Salisbury Handicap. After Galway had made most of the running Mazama ran to the front and won very easily from Etta, who finished fast and just beat Galway by a head for second place. Tatam Tatau ended up a better favourite than Humboldt and Songbird for the Dunedin Handicap, and after the favourite and Humboldt, who both began well, had carried on the running to the distance, Emerson dashed up on Sungleam and just beat Tatau Tatau by a head. Kilcullen finished fast on the outside, and the judge placed him second, which certainly seemed wrong. The Otago Handicap was a good betting race, Warlove eventually ending, up favourite. From a good start Radial, Jock and Warlove were first to show out, but when they hit the back stretch Jock had drawn clear of the field and led from Sunny Corner, Warlove, and Malaga. After passing the five-furlong post Malaga shot to the front, where Warlike was next to last in a strungout field. Malaga led Warlove up the hill and into the straight, where Warlike was closing up. At the distance Malaga was done with and Warlove i was clear in front. Over the last half--1 furlong Linden and Warlike made great efforts, but Warlove just lasted long enough to secure the verdict from Linden by a short head. Warlike was barely a length away, with Malaga Wartone was backed down to extravagant odds on for the Trial Stakes. Dutch Courage jumped out smartly, and she never gave the favourite a look in, winning easily by four lengths from Wartone, with Lomagundi third. Satisfaction was always first choice for the Federal Handicap, but she never looked dangerous. Killowen quickly took charge and led Bokelaine right into the straight. He came right away from the distance and beat Beusliire by fully four lengths, with Bokelaine a head away. Corn Bigs was always favourite for the Burnside Handicap and owed his success to being well on the move when the barrier rose, while Sunny Loch failed to get away. Corn Bigs led all the way and just lasted long enough to beat Sunny Loch by a head, with The Frenchman two lengths further awav third. The day's racing concluded with the Otokia Welter, for which Foo Chow ended up a slightly better favourite than Twinkle and Kilkee. Kilkee began quickly and led for half the distance, when Twinkle ran to the front and led round the turn. Marianne headed him below the distance, where Poo Chow was coming fast, but in a fine finish he just failed to reach Marianne, who won by a head, with Twinkle half a length away.
