A harbour watchman yesterday found the trawler Nora Niven, which was tied up at the Queen's Wharf for the holidays, settling down "by the stern. Examination disclosed a couple of feet of water over the engineroom plates. The Fire Brigade pumped the •hip dry, and the tug Pelican later stood by. keeping the water down. It Is supposed that the heavy Jobble on the harbour, owing to the northerly wind, caused the ship to strain some rivets. The vessel will be placed on the slip to-day for examination. NOTE. The Kakapo, Katoa, Hlttawa, and Rahika were idle this morning owing to the shortage of trucks and labour. UNION S.B. COMPANY. The Te Anau is to sail this evening for Dunedln, and after discharge will lift the cargo offering for Napier and Gisborne. She ■will continue taking in at Timaru, and will flllup at Lyttelton. The Kahika and Koklri will be docked at Lyttelton for survey as soon as their Greytnouth cargoes have been landed. There were no fewer than 10 vessels of the Union Company in port yesterday, the number including six colliers. The Waipori will load coal at Newcastle this week for a New Zealand port. The Kaitangata is to leave Melbourne on December 30 for Adelaide, where she will load for New Zealand. The Waltomo, with coal from Newcastle and Port Kembla, is due at Wellington today. The Kanna is due back at Lvttelton on Saturday to take in cargo for Wellington and Auckland. The Karamu, when finished discharging her cargo of coal at Wellington, will be placed on the patent slip for cleaning. KINSEY & CO. The Baden-Powell is to sail from Lyttelton this evening cargo-laden for Wellington. The Wakatu should be here to-morrow from Wellington, via Kaikoura, and is set Ufwn for saiUng on Thursday on the return CANTERBURX S.S. COMPANY. The Breeze is due to sail this evening with general cargo for Picton and Wangalul. The Calm is expectpd from Wellington to~ norrow morning, and is to be dispatched n the evening for Timaru and Dunedln. A. RHIND & CO. VThe Wootton, now engaged at the unioadng of a timber cargo from Greymouth, is to >e placed on the slip to-morrow to undergo ier annual overhaul. - F. E. SUTTON & CO. The Orepuki is dup at Lyttelton from ircymouth at \hc end of this week, carrying i cargo of timber. After discharge she oads general cargo and produce for the lame port, and is expected to sail about be middle of next week. The John sailed from here last week for Wellington and Wanganui with produce, uid proceeds from the latter port to Wcstlort to load coal for Wanganui. The Oplhi arrived at Wanganui on Chrlstnas Day with a full load of coal from Jewcastle. On completion of discharge she iroceeds to Opua to load timber for Ausralia. The Bonsrlla. which Is now in WelHngon, is expected in Lyttelton next week with i cargo of cose oil, of which about 11,000 ases will be landed here. THE FIREBRAND. The Firebrand, which is being fitted out |t Wellington for the Chatham Islands rade, has been renamed Kama.

BUNKERING WITH OIL. A new departure is embodied in the extension of the Miramar wharf at Wellington, for which plans are now being prepared. The wharf will be extended to provide berthage for an ocean-going steamer and a large intercolonial collier. The Vacuum Oil Company, which is erecting oil-fuel tanks at Miramar, has obtained permission to run a main dowii the wharf, so that oil arriving by tank steamers can be pumped into the shore, tanks, and vessels requiring oil fuel can be bunkered at the wharf. This installation is the first of .its kind in New Zealand, and whelk completed will be of great service to oil-burning vessels which visit the port. PERSONAL. Mr A. Russell, chief officer of the Klltawa, is at present at Wellington on holidfiy leave. Mr J. Cameron, late chief officer of he Shahriston, is now on the Komaia. * Captain T. A. Dykes, who'for 13 years has been examiner of masters and matfs and also surveyor of ships in Auckland, and who has been promoted to commander of the Amokura, received a presentation of a number of articles of plate, etc., from the officers and'masters of the mercantile marine trading in and out and around Auckland. Captain Cliffe, wHo represented the overseas and foreign going officers, made the presentation, and spoke of the esteem and regard that branch of the service had for Captain Dykes. Mr J, Gilmour joined the Paloona as second engineer in place of Mr G. E. Dickie. OVERSEAS VESSELS. The Raranga arrived at Wellington yesterday from Auckland to continue discharge of her Montreal cargo. Her freight for New Zealand and Australian ports amounted to 10,036 tons. Captain C. M. Andrews is in command of the vessel. > The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company advise that the R.M.S. lonic is to sail from Wellington at daybreak on Thursday for Southampton and London, via Panama and ports. Passengers' luggage must be alongside, the ship at 2 p.m. to-morrow, and passengers are requared to embark that evening. The Union Company's mail steamer Makura is due at Auckland on January 4 from Vancouver, Via Honolulu and Suva/ The vessel is making her first trip as air> oil-burner. The liner Opawa, now discharging Liverpool cargo at Wellington, is to .say ou Friday for Lyttclton and Dunedin. * The City'of Bristol is to leave Dunedin on Friday for Melbourne. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Surrey, which arrived at Wellington from Napier on Friday evening, is to sail for London, via Panama, on Thursday. The same company's Kaikoura left Timaru on Friday morning for Wanganui roadstead for Homeward loading. ~ From Wanganui the vessel is due at Wellington about the end of this week to fill up and sail for London, via Panama. The Union Company has been advised by cable*that the steamer Ganges lift Calcutta on December 22 for . The Port Napier arrived at Auckland on Saturday from Gisborne to complete Homeward loading. She is to sail from Auckland on Thursday for London, via Panama.
