ASHBURTON TROTTING CLUB. Despite the unfavourable -weather there was a very large attendance at the Summer Meeting of the Ashburton Trotting Club yesterday. For the first two races tho track was In very fair order, hut subsequently It cut up badly. The racing was Of more than average Interest, and the fields of good strength. The Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting opened to-day in fine weather, with a record attendance, including the Gover-nor-General and Lady Jellicoe. The course was in excellent order, and the racing good. The Auckland Cup provided a fine contest, and a great finish between the placed horses. The totalisator investments were £154,188 10/-, as compared with £124,916 10/- last Boxing Day. Concluding results : AUCKLAND CUP, of 3000 sovs. Two miles. Starland 6.11 (T. Gasbag piloted the field for half a mile, when Blue Cross took charge from Gasbag, Prince Willonyx, and Tenterfleld. Along the back strcach Uncle Ned moved up, but was unable to sustain the effort. At the six furlong post First Salute made a forward move, and got close to the leaders. At the distance First Salute, Gasbag, and Starland were fighting for the lead, and in a great finish Starland won by a neck; a head separating the other two. Oratress was fourth. Time, 3min 30Jsec.
