WORKMAN KILLED.

0 FALLS ON CONCRETE FLOOR. Mr S. E. McCarthy, District Coroner, held an inquiry yesterday afternoon into the death of William Fenton, a married man, residing at 159 Aldwin's Road, Linwood, which resulted from injuries received from falling on a concrete floor while working on the roof of the store of A. S. Paterson and 0., Ltd., at the corner of Selwyn Street and Moorhouse Avenue on Monday. Deceased was employed by J. and W. Jamieson, Ltd., builders and contractors. Dr A. B. Pearson, pathologist at the Christchurch Hospital, stated that, after carrying out a post-mortem examination of the body of deceased, he was oi opinion that death had been due to\ shock, caused by laceration of the brain, following on a fracture of the skull. The external injuries could have been caused by deceased falling on to a concrete floor from a height of 20 feet. Edward Marshall, foreman of works for J. and W. Jamieson, Ltd., and at present employed on extending the premises of A. S. Paterson and Co., Ltd., said that deceased was under him. On Monday afternoon deceased was working on the same platform as' witness, demolishing an old roof. The height oi the platform above the concrete varied from 18ft to 22ft. ■William Browning, a carpenter, also engaged on A. S. Paterson and Co.'s building, said that he saw deceased fall through an old window opening in the roof where he had been working, breaking two boards in front of him. Witness could not account for deceased's falling. The coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, and that the injuries were sustained by his falling from a height of about 20ft on to a concrete floor while engaged in his usual occupation as a carpenter.
