PRODIGIOUS WASTE.
PUBLIC EXPENDITURE. MONEY THROWN AWAY. By Vault. — Press Astoeiatinn. — Copyright. (A. & N.Z.) LONDON", AuK. 11. A report on Ihe public accounts, containing glaring examples of prodigious waste, gives instances in connection with the erection of hutments which verge on being scandalous. Much money was spent by the Ministry of Information without any attempt at securing Treasury approval. The commissioners found there was much unnecessary loss through remiss administration. The sum of £700,000 was advanced to the Y.M.C.A., of which £IOO,OOO was repaid. It was eventually decided that this should be treated as a War Oflice grant in respect of such services as education. The Food Production Department made a loss of £-1,000,000 on various schemes which were "overoptimistically undertaken."
