WINTER CARNIVAL.

RACING AT RICCARTON.

NATIONAL HURDLES DAY.

The Grand National meeting was continued at Riccarton to-day in greatly improved weather. There was a very large attendance, which included many visitors from all parts of the Dominion. Despite the .hard usage to which it was subjected on Tuesday the course turned out in nice order, for, though on the slow side the going was much firmer. The fields were quite up to the average strength, and the racing was interesting. Details are:— WOOLSTON HANDICAP, of 200 sovs; Apprentice riders. Six furlongs. 4 T. Once into the course proper, Greekson joined the leaders, and a little further on took charge. Stalling off a strong challenge by The Boss, <ircekson won all out by a bare length. At a slightly bigger gap came Bothnia, just clear of Tortrix. Time: lmin 19$ sec. HUNT CLUB CUP, of 200 sovs. About two miies and a-half. 1 H. When the stand double was leached Golden Grape and Leaflet were in .rharge. Here Dunmure fell and Leaflet lost ground. Golden Grape had established a useful lead at Cutts's, Leaflet and Lawsuit heading the others. Once into the back straight Bill Terry and Lawsuit improved their positions, and at the Kennels double Lawsuit was showing the way to Bill Terry. The pair race round the top turn almost on terms, and rose at the last fence on terms. but Lawsuit came down. This enabled Bill Terry to score by a dozen lengths from Wieklow, who was two lengths in front of Golden Grape. Southerner finished a furlong back. Time; smlij 12sec.

The leading pair were practically on terms as the Kennels double was approached, the second of which saw Golden Prince part company with his rider. This left Oakleigh right out by himself, .and, jumping in great style, he won very easily by six lengths from Crib, who put in •s good run over the last six furlongs. Racing past the stand the order was: Deviation, All Talk, Fisher, Ladogeur, Gaylight, and Kohii. Before reaching the mile post All Talk fell and a little further on Gaylight also came to grief.
