PERSONALS.

Mr A. D. Ford (Mayor of Riceartoti) left for Wellington' last night. The Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C., arrived in Christchurch from the north this morning.

Mr Andrew Anderson, who has been in the North Island, returned to Christchurch this morning.

Air .T. B. Merrett has returned to Christchurch, after spending some months in California.

Mr W. M. Caven, the newly-appointed postmaster at the High Street office, commenced his duties yesterday.

The Rangiora School Committee has recided to recommend Mr E. L. Breach to the vacancy in the school staff caused by the resignation of Miss G. Wilson.

Captain Thos. W. Wylie, M.C., R.A.M.C, arrived in Wellington by the Manuka on Tuesday, and came down to Christchurch this morning, on his way to Invercargill. He is accompanied bv Mrs Wylie.

A civic reception will bo tendered to Judge Borst, of New York, Grand Sire of the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Oddfellows, in. the City Council Chambers, at noon to-morrow. Judge and Mrs Borst arrived in Christchurch from the north this morning. The resignation of Mr E. J. Howard, M.l'., as a member was received at yesterday's meeting of the Canterbury Repatriation Board, and it was decided to send this on to the Department, in Wellington. On the motion of Mr A. F. Drayton, it w r as further decided to write, thanking Mr Howard for his past services and expressing regret that he had found it necessary to resign. The chairman (Mr A. W. Jamieson) paid a tribute to the assistance given to the board by Mr Howard. Mr J. G. Lancaster, M.Sc, 8.E., A.M.Inst.C.E., has come over to New Zealand from Australia, to take up the position of chief electrical engineer to Messrs Hay and Viekerman, consulting engineers, Wellington, who are constructional engineers for the Southland hydro-electrical power scheme. Mr Lancaster, who is in Christchurch at present, is an old boy of the Boys' High School, and graduated at Canterbury College. For the past four years he has filled the post of electrical engineer to the Metropolitan Railways Construction Branch of the N.S.W. Railways Department, being engaged on the design and construction work of the proposed city tube and suburban electric railways.
