A PRIVATE BALL.

RICCARTON HOUSE FUNCTION. The second big ball of the week was given last night by Mr and Mrs John Deans, of Coalgate, at the fine old family residence, "Riccarton House," the site, by the way, of much interesting "early days" history. It bore a gay air of festivity last night, blazing with light and delicate colour, the latter provided by the beautiful and artistic decorations and the dresses of the ladies present. The ball was quite the largest of the kind held this season, and was conmieusurately enjoyable and well arranged. Mrs Deans received in a beautiful gown of pale pink gauze, mounted on satin, and touched effectively with gold. Dancing took place in the drawingroom, and a delicious supper was served in the dining-room, the floral decorations being carried out in masses of pink japonica. Miss Macdonald's orchestra supplied the music, with extras by Miss Una Rattray, Messrs J. Vernon, E. Stead and D. Helmore. Amongst the guests were Mr and Mrs William Deans (Sundown), Mr and Mrs James Deans (Homebush), Mr and.Mrs H. A. Knight and Miss Xeroli Knight (Racecourse Hill), Mr and Mrs Melville Jameson (Timaru), Mr and Mrs Eric Riddiford (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Edgar Stead, Mr and Mrs Leslie Orbell, Mr and Mrs S.
