PROFITEERING CASES.
CHARGES PENDING. ADJOURNMENTS GRANTED. On the information of John William Collins, secretary of the New Zealand Board of Trade, charges of profiteering have been preferred against Aitchison, Steans and Co., importers, Christchurch; Bernard Darby, chemist, trading as Wallace and Co., Christchurch; and Forbes, Ltd., ironmongers, Lyttelton. Aitchison, Steans and Co., importers, Christchurch, are charged with having sold to W. E. Donnithorne, B. Coira. J. Kent, E. Haley, E. Jones, and Mrs Willyams, 1000 Clarence cigarettes, each, at £3 2/2, an unreasonably high price. Bernard Darby, chemist, trading as Wallace and Co., is charged with having sold to Robert E. Alexander, a half-gallon of Borj at £2 5/-, an unreasonably high price. Forbes, Ltd., ironmongers, Lyttelton, arc charged with having ottered (o sell to Leslie Arthur Turner and Henry Voyce, rabbit traps at 37/per dozen, an unreasonably high price.
When the cases were called before Mr S. E. McCarthy, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day Mr A. T. Donnelly. Acting-Crown Prosecutor, applied for, and was granted, an adjournment to August 31.
