CHARGES OF FRAUD.
EVADING CUSTOMS DUTY. AUCKLAND FIRM CHARGED. An impending ease of interest to importers generally was mentioned before Mr S. E. McCarthy, 8.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning. It involves charges against an Auckland firm of importers, of intending to defraud the 'revenue of the Customs Department by making an erroneous declaration. The inofrmation was laid by William John Wratt, Collector of Customs at Christchurch. Harry Tallerman and Edmund Russell Jones, importers, carrying on business at Auckland, under the name of Tallerman and Co., were charged that, with intent to defraud the revenue of Customs, by evading or enabling some other person to evade payment of full duty on 10 cases of chinaware, they did mako an entry which was erroneous, in that the declaration made by E. R. Jones, as required by the Customs Act, 1913, stated the fair market value of the goods at £6l 11/6, whereas the value was, in fact, £262 0/3. A separate information has also been laid against Edmund Russell Jones. Mr A. T. Donnelly, Acting Crown Prosecutor, asked for an adjournment till August 24. This was granted.
