Mr I.veil N. Wilson, sixth son of the late Judge Wilson, and brother of Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M. at Wauganui, died at Croomassi, Ashanti, West Africa, on July 18. He was in charge of a big mining concession at Ashanti. A telegram from Wauganui announces (he death of Mr T. D. Cummins, a pioneer settler, aged 71. Members of the Public Works Department, gathered in Parliament Buildings on Friday to make a presentation to Mr R. W. Holmes, 1.5.0., M.lnst., C.J':., who has retired from the position of engineor-in-ehief, after 49 years' service. The presentation was made by the Minister of Public Works (Hon. J. G. Coates), who spoke in the highest terms of the valuable services rendered to the country by Mr Holmes. Mr F. W. Furkert, who has been temporarily appointed successor to Mr Holmes, read an address, in which it was stated that Mr Holmes was the first engineering cadet on the original establishment, of the department.
