TO-DAY'S CASES

Mr S. E. McCarthy, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court to-day. Drunkenness.—Two first offenders for drunkenness were eaeli fined 5/-, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. A Vagrant.—Alexander Thompson, on remand iron) yesterday, was charged with drunkenness. lie also appeared lor sentence on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person, in that he brggcK alms in Colombo Street. Senior-Sergeant Cummings said that on the charge of vagrancy accused had been convicted and ordered to come up fur sentence when called upon, on the understanding that lie remained in the Salvation Armv Home lor IL> months. Remanded.—Percy Valentine Johns (Mr C. S. Thomas) appeared for sentence on a charge of stealing from Warner's Hotel a gold watch, valued at fl'O, (he property of Jean Wager. He was further charged that oil or about August L'!l. I'.tMt, at Wellington he stole a diamond ring valued at £lO, the property of ltachucl de Pass. On the second charge accused was remanded to appear at Wellington next I'riday, and on the first he was convicted and ordered to come up I'or sentence when called upon, Breach of Midwifes Act.—hinct Peagram (Mr A. J. Mallcy) .7(1 years of age, charged with practising as ' a midwife without being registered, was convicted and fined £1 and costs. Maintenance Cases.—Charles Montgomery, charged With being £l2 15/- in arrears on a maintenance order made in respect of his child, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, in default of payment of the arrears. Henry Joseph Shanks (Mr P. P J Amodeo) was proceeded against by' his wile, Pearl Shanks (Mr 1,. A, Dougnll) for maintenance. The application was dismissed, there being no proof that complainant was a destitute person or that defendant had any means. Kliza Kgan proceeded against her husband, George l.gan, for maintenance, separation, and guardianship orders tin the grounds of drunkenness and cruelty There was no appearance of the defendant. The orders were granted, maintenance being lixed at 30/- per week.
