LIABILITY DISPUTED.

BRIDGE AT BURWOOD.

At the Christchureli City Council's meeting a fortnight ago there was* some discussion regarding the Heathcote County Council's decision to proceed with the erection of a bridge across the Avon River at Burwood at a spot at which, it was said, a bridge would not be of any appreciable benefit to the people in the district. The matter affects the City Council because a portion of the area which is being called upon to contribute to the cost of the bridge is now in the city. Last evening the council had before it the following report from the Bylaws and Finance Committee:— "The Heathcote County Council has intimated that it intends shortly to call for tenders for the erection of a bridge over the River Avon at. Burwood, the cost of which (less £-300 paid by the Shirley Extonsion Syndicate) is to be borne by the following districts: Waimairj County, one third; Avonside Riding of Heathcote County (as constituted in 1916) two thirds. The County Council states that, as the cost could not be determined at the time i of the Avonside-City adjustment of accounts, the matter was left in abeyance jas a contingent liability of that part i of Avonside which joined the city in 11917.

"The committee recommends thnt the council accept no liability in the matter as the amalgamation with the city took place on March 20, 1917, -and the commissioner's report was issued on April 26, 1917, and, also, the City Council was not represented, nor asked to be represented, at the commission." The report was adopted.
