To-day's river report states that the north branch of tho Waimakariri and the Opihi Rivers are clear, the Rakaia, Rangitata and Waitaki are fishable, and the south branch of the Waimakariri is discoloured. A cricket match between the Veterans' Club and a team from Little River was played at Haglcy Park yesterday afternoon. Little River won by 15 runs on tho first innings, scoring 149 (W. Stanbury 28, H. J. French 21, Hunter 20), to the Veterans' 134 (P. D. Mansell 29 not out, C. Bascand 27, A. White 21).

A Press Association message states that at a by-eleetion held yesterday to fill a vacancy on the Westport Borough Council, caused by the resignation of Mr Donald McKenzie, the voting was:— E. R. Fox (former councillor) 352, J. E. Stirton 317, F. O'Gorman 254. A vacancy on the Westport Harbour Board was filled by the Borough Council, which unanimously appointed Cr J. W. Fair to the position. The monthly meeting of the Sydenham School Committee was held last evening, there being present:—Mr E. L. McKeon (chairman), Mesdames A. Risely and S. Willoughby and Messrs C. H. B. Poore, R. J. Duncan, J. Butterfield, F. A, Frayle and A. C. Fricker. The headmaster reported that the average attendance for the month had been:—Boys 506 , and girls 471; the total being 93 per cent, of the roll. Owing to illness, Miss Duncan had been granted leave of absence. Miss. Smith is relieving in the meantime. It was decided to inform the Education Board of the unsatisfactory state of the sump in connection with the technical portion of the school. Statements were made that it was becoming a nuisance to the playing ground. The chairman reported ■ that the blackboards in the new. school had not been satisfactory. It was decided to write to the Education Board in connection with the matter.
