The cruiser Calliope was severely damaged by fire off the Lizard, when proceeding to the Azores. An oilred pipe burst and set fire to the oil fuel. The flames spread to several decks. A petty officer prevented an explosion of the boiler by forcing his way into the engine-room through the oil flames and turning on the steam pipes. The flames were mastered after four hours. [H.M.S. Calliope is a light cruiser of 3800 tons, built In 1915. She carries two 6in guns, has a speed of 29 knots, and carries a complement of 400.]
