AN EDITOR RETIRES.

MR M. C. KEANE PROMOTED^ The Hon. W. H. Triggs, M.L.0., has resigned the editorship of the Christchurch "Press," which he has held for 25 years. Mr Triggs desires to have more leisure and freedom from anxiety than is possible to the editor of a metropolitan newspaper. Ho is succeeded by Mr M. C. Keane, who has been as-sistant-editor of the "Press" since 1913, and who has acted as editor during Mr Triggs's recent absence in Europe and. Great Britain. Mr Keane was born at Springfield and was educated at the Christchurch Boys' High School "and i Canterbury College, where he graduated with distinction, taking first-class honours in mathematics. His first regular newspaper work was done in ..the proof-reading room of the "Lytteltbn Times." He next secured a position as reporter on the "Evening Post," Wellington, and, as the writer of a weekly column headed, "A Casual Chron-' iclo," soon attracted attention. About this time he also contributed some exceedingly bright verses and paragraphs on topical subjects to the "Bulletin," Sydney, under the pen name of "M. Cormac." His next move was to the '' New Zealand Times'' as assistant editor, and on the establishment of the "Dominion" in 1906 Mr Eeane was offered and accepted a position on the editorial staff of that paper. Mr Keane displayed a faculty for political controversy that soon proved a very valuable asset to the "Dominion." His ' best work was done in the famous election campaign of 1911, when tho North// Island turned over largely to the Beform Party. It is generally conceded that the campaign waged by the "Dominion" was one of the principal contributing factors to the defeat of the Liberals. In 1913 Mr Keane joined the staff of the '' Press,'' and after some six years in the position of assistant-editor ' succeeds to the editorial chair. His many newspaper friends will extend him their most cordial congratulations , on his promotion and will watch his future career with great interest.
